This morning’s scheduled SOB for us was at 9am, and it was for all 3 of us. We were fortunate that our guide today was Dennis, the “penguin guy”. He said this was the first time the ship had been able to stop at this spot this season – the first part of the season, there is too much ice. As it was, there were large chunks of ice that our SOB pilot had to navigate around. Dennis told us about the island that we were headed to, where we would see Adelie penguins. They were named after Adelie Land, the wife of French explorer Jules Dumont d’Urville.
Mom and my sister brought binoculars, my sister and I both took photos. On the way back to the cruise ship, we came across Artic terns resting on a piece of ice. I got lucky in my pictures that I captured 2 of them as they started to fly away. This was our second SOB ride, and is now the 4th time we have been out in the Antarctica waters. Hopefully tomorrow’s planned landing will happen!
Upon returning to the ship, we watched a documentary from BBC: “Humpback Whales – A Detective Story”. Then my sister and I put some of our laundry in while we went to work out and our mom rested up. We were surprised by a note and a bottle of champagne from a friend of a friend who I met earlier this year at our mutual friend’s wedding! Kim works on the other Viking Expedition ship, Octantis.
